The internet is awash with ‘New Year, New You’ posts and you’ve already lost count the number of times you’ve been asked about your resolutions. If you haven’t made up your mind about your new year’s resolutions for 2017, here are some great skincare habits to get into for the next 12 months and beyond.
Wear SPF Every Day
No matter how many times we are told we should protect our skin by wearing sunscreen every day, many of us still forget. Whatever your excuse, whether it’s forgetfulness or that you simply don’t like the texture, 2017 is the year to commit to SPF protection. Even on a cloudy day, the sun can wreak havoc on the delicate skin of your face and neck, so don’t use the grey weather as an excuse to skip the sunscreen. If you choose to use a foundation or moisturiser that has SPF protection, make sure that it also has UVA protection, as both rays can be harmful to your skin.
Change Your Pillowcase Twice a Week
It might not be the nicest thing to think about as you’re sinking into your soft downy bed after a long day, but your pillow is probably harbouring bacteria that is fuelling your breakouts. The longer you leave your pillowcases between changes, the nastier bacteria builds up on it from the oils and dirt on your skin and hair. This is a prime recipe for a face full of spots, no matter how diligent you are with your cleansing routine. The new year is the perfect time to finally commit to banishing the breakouts by changing your pillowcases twice a week. Not only will your skin thank you for it, but that lovely sinking-into-clean-sheets feeling will come around a little more often as well.
Eat More Fruit and Veg
Rather than trying to make up for the excesses of the festive season by cutting your calories to a third of the recommended amount and blending everything into a juice, why not commit to something that will make you feel better long term? We’re always being told how good fruit and veg is for our health, so it’s not surprising that they’re amazing for our skin as well. Try to ensure half your plate is full of veg every meal, and swap breakout-inducing sugary or salty snacks for a piece of fruit. Not only will your skin look amazing, but you’ll feel fuller for longer, meaning those pounds are likely to drop off as well, without the drastic diet.
Remove Your Makeup Every Night
We’re all guilty of falling into bed fully clothed after a late night and waking up with a false eyelash stuck to our forehead and mascara all over the pillow, but 2017 is the year to finally stop. The oily makeup clogs your pores, and the bacteria that has built up throughout the day causes you to breakout. Make a resolution to cleanse properly every night to keep your skin clear and line-free, and keep a pack of makeup wipes by the bed for the times you’re just too tired to make it to the bathroom.
Drink More Water
It might already be on your list of resolutions, and so it should be, because drinking more water is a small change that can make a big difference. From investing in a fruit infuser to simply keeping a glass on your desk, your hydration method can take many forms. The government recommends that you drink between six and eight glasses of water a day, and once you start meeting your quota you’ll notice a big difference in your skin. It helps keep it firm and hydrated, as well as preventing breakouts and the signs of ageing. An all-round wonder treatment that is literally on tap.
Wash Your Makeup Brushes Weekly
When was the last time you washed your makeup brushes? Last week? Last year? Never? Brushes are breeding grounds for bacteria, and if you haven’t washed yours recently then you’re effectively spreading that bacteria around your face every time you apply your makeup. Invest in a mild baby shampoo and give them a quick scrub in the sink each week, before blasting them dry with the hairdryer. Not only will your skin improve, but you’ll also notice that your makeup goes on much smoother without all that claggy product build up.
Overhaul Your Skincare Products
Not all skincare products were made equal, and with such a huge range of products out there, there really is no excuse for using the wrong moisturiser for your skin type. Start your new year as you mean to go on and treat yourself to a good quality cleanser, toner and moisturiser that suit your skin type. If you aren’t sure where to start, most skincare companies will have a specialist advisor who can assess your skin type and recommend specific products for your concerns. Choose products that have been certified by expert dermatologists and use natural ingredients to really watch your skin flourish as a result of your new regime.
Begin an Anti-Ageing Routine
You might feel like you’re too young to start thinking about working anti-ageing products into your skincare routine, but as with most things, prevention is much better than a cure. Start adding a targeted anti-ageing treatment such as a vitamin C-rich serum into your skincare routine and you’ll be glad you did when your skin is still smooth, bright and plump in years to come. The delicate skin around the eyes is often the first place to show the signs of ageing, so a specialist eye cream is a great place to start.
At Vivderma, we stock a range of moisturising products which target specific areas of the skin.
Learn to Love Your Skin
In a world where we’re bombarded with images of airbrushed perfection and immaculately contoured models, this can be one of the hardest resolutions to make. No matter what your skin type, everyone has imperfections and each person’s skin has its own unique character. Learn to love your freckles, moles and scars, and remember that someone is always looking at your skin jealously whether it is fair or dark, shiny or matte, freckled or clear. There can be no better habit for 2017 than learning to focus on the beauty of your skin, rather than its flaws.
